Safety seat? more like a death chair for kids

A five-year-old girl, Chang, was a student in an early intervention therapy program at the Min Hu Academy in Xin Chu County. Yesterday, she slipped down her saftey seat for some reason, causing her to be asphyxiated by her seat belt.

The family thinks it is the teacher's lack of care that had caused the accident. Initial investigations find that it was because the seat belt was tied so loosely that the girl slid down her seat, resulting in such a tragic death.

The CEO of Catholic Hua-Kuang Center for the Development of the Disabled, Wu Fu Mei, admitted yesterday morning that there had been negligence among the staff members who were supposedly looking after the children; moreover, Wu claimed that the organization would take full responsibility in this matter.

The social services in Xin Chu County have also stated that they will emend the basic trainings of all teachers in the future and periodically have a standards check.

Catholic Hua-Kuang Center for the Development of the Disabled is a place for children under the age of six with severe mental disorders. Usually, it is a class of six; but yesterday, three had a leave of absence. So there were only three children being taken care of by two teachers.

Chang, was a premature baby with a condition called 水腦症(Hydrocephalus). She was blind, mute, but afraid of the dark; therefore, she was constantly anxious.

Her teacher strapped her to the safety chair as a solution. And left her alone for an hour to nap. But when they went to check on her again, she was already lifeless and beyond saving.

CPR was performed regardless, but she was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The five-year-old was strangled by four straps of belts that were supposed to secure her to the chair.
