Lin, a thirty-nine-year-old man from Yunlin County, feels like he is constantly being watched and persecuted ever since his divorce a year ago.
This Feburary, he drove his SUV into the flower bed in front of the Presidential Office--but it was because, Lin reasoned, that he had dropped his phone.
Lin was immediately admitted to the psychiatric ward. But two months later, his symptoms seem to have come back. Yesterday morning at eight a.m. the man drove to the Presidential Office Building again and attempted to pour gasoline onto himself.
When Lin arrived in a pick-up truck, the police nearby and the military police had already taken notice and were on high alert. And when the gasoline started to pour down onto Lin's body, the military police rushed to take away any lighters and the gasoline tank. After Lin had been subdued, he was taken back to the police station for interrogation.
However, Lin would not say why he wanted to light himself on fire. He only stated that he was being persecuted and that he wanted to make an appeal to the president. The police then contacted Lin's family and escorted him to Chiayi County to help him to admit to the psychiatric hospital again.
The family refused to be interviewed by the press, but their neighbors revealed that Lin's mental state was good until he and his wife separated a year ago. Also, Lin is currently unemployed due to the fact that he has just lost his business with his father. The two had a construction company together; but Lin's father was severely injured two years ago and had to stop working all together. Without his father, Lin eventually had to shut down the business.
As Lin's mental state is not in a good place and is always constantly on edge, police and relatives are working together to monitor his behavior to prevent future self-detriment.
